Larch and Kingfishers Classes

Year 3 and 4 trip to the Sustainability Centre

Last Friday, our younger people had their visit to the Sustainability Centre. We started the day by learning about ‘shingles’. These are the tiles that are fitted to the roof of the outdoor classroom and are made of hazel. ‘Sean’ showed us how the hazel can be ‘split’ to make shingles as well as a hammer. Charlie helped him! We had a go at making a shingled roof on a model. We also had a go at weaving with willow and making a small ‘hurdle’.

It wasn’t long before we came across the eco- toilets! No water is necessary, just a hole in the ground and lots of sawdust! After we had found these, we a had a brief look at the Yurts. These are tent structured homes where people can stay in comfort. All fuel, water and heating for the Yurts are sourced sustainably.

After lunch, we had a go at making tree spirits. We placed clay on to a chosen tree and used anything we could find on the grounds around us, to turn the clay into a face. We just about had time at the end of the day, for Sean to show us various ways of making fire with various materials. We realised that this was just a demonstration and definitely not for us to do without an adult!

We were very lucky with the weather and had a fantastic day!
